Learning something live has its own merits.

These days online education is evolving rapidly. However, the present situation due to the pandemic is driving us to explore more in the aspects of upskilling ourselves. Students have a greater attention span and focus on what is being taught. Live lectures go a long way to replicating these effects. Most online courses these days are pre-recorded i.e. they have been recorded and uploaded and can be watched at the student’s convenience. It has some disadvantages which may affect the learning process and harm the learner’s future.

So, here are some disadvantages of recorded lectures.

  1. Lack of Interaction

During live sessions, there is an option to pause and interact with the tutor. But, here there is nothing as such. And we cannot even connect with our peers to discuss the topic and solve commonly faced problems.

2. Comfort Zone

It's a human tendency to get into a comfort zone and postpone tasks that are not urgent. Recorded lessons encourage this behavior as they try to be flexible, but in turn, learners end up postponing them repetitively.

3. No deadlines/ a timeline to complete

In recorded sessions, we do not have any viewing restrictions or a specific time to complete the lesson. That can result in complacency in completing the class. Gradually, everything gets delayed.

4. Easy to cheat

When there are assignments to do, you have an easier way to get through it by cheating. But, there is no one to catch you in the act. Doing unethical things will build up a habit, and you might end up searching for answers instead of thinking of a solution. It plays a large hand in impacting your education negatively.

5. Network issues

These days connectivity is one of the biggest problems. There are also many situations when people miss lectures for a long time. And some of them even expire. You might not be having the required resources at the right time.

6. No one to track progress

In most of the pre-recorded lectures, there is no one to take care of your progress and correct your work. You will not get any response from the tutor in case of any doubts or facing problems in understanding the concepts.

7. Lack of practical knowledge

In recorded sessions, we miss the practical way to approach a problem based on what we have learned. In most cases, recorded sessions lack In explaining real-life situations. But conceptual knowledge is taught at peaks.

These are some of the disadvantages of pre-recorded lectures. Though the impact of recorded lessons differs from person to person, the problems listed above are some of the most common ones.
